Zed Agentic Editing

Zed Agentic Editing

The IDE scratch-built in Rust, now with 100% more agents

Overview

What it is

Zed is a next-generation code editor designed for high-performance collaboration with humans and AI.

Intent

I need it when

Maintain team-wide AI governance and control AI feature usage across the organization

Zed Business plan provides org-level admin controls to restrict or disable specific AI models, turn off Edit Predictions org-wide, lock data sharing settings, and enable unified spend visibility across all seats—addressing enterprise governance needs.

Develop code at high speed with minimal latency and performance overhead

Zed is written from scratch in Rust to efficiently leverage multiple CPU cores and GPU, enabling fast agentic editing, parallel agent execution, and native speed for file navigation and tool execution without the sluggishness of traditional editors.

Get real-time code suggestions and auto-completions without leaving the editor

Zed provides Edit Prediction (powered by Zeta2 open-weight model) that automatically suggests edits based on recent changes and cursor position, plus Inline Assistant for explicit code transformations. Both work natively in the editor without context switching.

Collaborate with AI agents to write and modify code faster while maintaining human control over changes

Zed's agentic editing lets users delegate work to AI agents, follow progress live, and review changes before accepting them. This enables fluent human-AI collaboration where developers stay in control while leveraging AI speed for code generation, refactoring, and navigation tasks.

Use multiple AI models and external agents within a single editor workflow

Zed supports any agent via ACP (Anthropic Claude Agent, Codex, OpenCode), allows users to bring their own API keys from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and others, and enables parallel generation with multiple models configured simultaneously for comparison.

Drop

Not a fit when

  • User requires Windows-only or Linux-only support without cross-platform needs, as Zed is available on macOS, Linux, and Windows but may have platform-specific limitations
  • User needs traditional non-agentic code editing without AI collaboration features and prefers a lightweight editor without AI infrastructure
  • Organization requires SSO, SAML, or SCIM authentication, as these are planned but not currently available in Business plan
  • User wants to avoid any telemetry or data collection, as Zed collects usage data for product improvement
  • Team needs fixed AI credit allotments per seat; Business plan uses usage-based billing without bundled credits
  • User requires offline-only operation; Zed's agentic features depend on cloud-hosted models or external API connections
