SpeedBump

The intentionally annoying app to break doomscrolling

Website speedbumpapp.com
Overview

What it is

We've all been there: you open Instagram to check a message from a friend but end up wasting an hour watching videos of alpacas. Before you can open addictive apps, SpeedBump asks you how long you want to use them. The longer you choose, the longer the delay. Once time's up, it annoys you out with rain, dancing cats, and more – helping you stay intentional and accountable.

Intent

I need it when

Stop doomscrolling while maintaining ability to connect with friends

Unlike apps that block social media entirely, SpeedBump allows users to open apps intentionally but makes prolonged scrolling uncomfortable. Users can still message friends or check updates without the app preventing access—it just makes mindless scrolling annoying enough to discourage it.

Build awareness of phone addiction and develop healthier digital habits

SpeedBump provides streak tracking to show consecutive days without disabling the app, displays usage data, and creates psychological friction through annoyances. After 2 weeks of consistent use, users report increased awareness of their usage patterns and spending more time on activities they truly enjoy.

Reduce excessive social media scrolling without completely quitting apps

SpeedBump lets users set time limits when opening addictive apps like TikTok or Instagram, then displays intentionally annoying interruptions (cats, cookie banners, rain) after time expires, forcing a 15-minute break before re-entry. This prevents compulsive behavior while allowing intentional use.

Manage ADHD-related phone addiction and impulsive app opening

SpeedBump's friction-based approach works for ADHD users by requiring active decision-making when opening apps (setting time limits) rather than relying on willpower or motivation. The escalating wait time (more usage = longer wait) prevents compulsive re-opening without blocking access entirely.

  • User needs website or desktop browser blocking (currently Android app only, website blocking coming soon)
  • User requires iOS app immediately (currently Android-first, iOS waitlist exists)
  • User wants to block specific in-app features like Reels or Shorts (feature coming soon, not yet available)
