Overview

What it is

Rainy Skies is an indie iOS weather app designed by a solo developer based on the foundation of the now defunct Dark Sky weather app. Rainy Skies now supports radar and has an Apple Watch app with widgets and complications.

Intent

I need it when

Get weather insights through conversational AI on modern Apple devices

Rainy Skies includes an AI chat feature on Apple Intelligence-enabled devices that answers questions about upcoming weather conditions. Users can ask natural language questions about forecasts rather than navigating menus, making weather lookup faster and more intuitive.

Access weather information across multiple Apple devices with synchronized settings

Rainy Skies works on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch with synced settings across devices. Users can view weather on their wrist via Apple Watch complications and widgets, access radar on iPad/Mac, and maintain consistent preferences across all platforms without manual reconfiguration.

Receive timely weather alerts and notifications customized to personal thresholds

Rainy Skies offers customizable threshold-based notifications for UV Index, wind gusts, temperature, and precipitation. Users can set alerts when conditions cross specific values (e.g., UV above 7, wind gusts at 40mph) and choose whether notifications appear always or only when thresholds are exceeded. Daily summaries are also customizable with wind, UV, and other metrics.

Use multiple weather widgets and data visualizations to monitor conditions throughout the day

Rainy Skies offers hourly, daily, and combined hourly+daily chart widgets plus Apple Watch complications. Silver subscription unlocks faster refresh rates and additional widget options. Users can customize which data types appear in widgets and choose from multiple visualization styles to suit their monitoring needs.

Get accurate, visually clear weather information at a glance without cluttered interfaces

Rainy Skies displays weather with an efficient, clean design inspired by the discontinued Dark Sky app. Users see current conditions, hourly forecasts, and daily summaries with color-coded visual indicators (blue for rain, gray for clouds, yellow/purple for clear conditions) that communicate weather patterns instantly without information overload.

Drop

Not a fit when

  • User needs detailed radar data with extended forecast periods beyond 30 minutes, as radar was temporarily removed and is being rebuilt
  • User requires a weather app with extensive third-party integrations or API access for custom workflows
  • User prefers weather apps with aggressive advertising or data monetization models, as Rainy Skies has no ads
  • User needs weather data for regions outside the US, as weather alerts are sourced from National Weather Service (US only)
  • User requires a weather app optimized for Android devices, as Rainy Skies is Apple ecosystem only (iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Vision)
