Get paid NOT to use social media

Website dayo.co
Overview

What it is

Dayo is the first app to allow you to set screentime deals with your teen and reward them with real cash. Track the apps you decide, set limits you decide, and instead of blocking them, reward them. They stay under the limit, they keep the money in their wallet. They go over, they watch that money go back into their parents wallet. This isn't bribary, it is proven psychological technique that creates buy in and teaches healthy behaviour for their teenage years and beyond.

Intent

I need it when

Build accountability with peers while reducing phone use

Dayo's Buddies feature (Totem Pro) lets users invite up to 5 friends to see when they lock their Totems and maintain streaks. This creates peer accountability without nagging, showing real-time commitment to screen-time goals.

Get motivated to meet daily screen-time goals with tangible rewards

Dayo's Deals mode lets a parent or supporter fund a daily screen-time limit. Users earn money (up to $5/day) for staying under the limit and lose 10¢ per minute over. Earnings cash out to 100+ brands (Amazon, Starbucks, DoorDash, PayPal), making the goal concrete and rewarding.

Understand and break specific app habits with visual progress tracking

Dayo shows 'Today's Top Apps' to reveal where time is spent, lets users tap habits to Totem them, and displays streaks and statistics over time. Home screen widgets and lock screen live activities keep progress visible without opening the app.

Reduce social media and app usage through behavioral friction and real-world accountability

Dayo's Totem mode locks selected apps until the user physically locates and photographs a chosen real-world object (coffee mug, plant, dog), creating friction that interrupts impulse scrolling. The walk back to find the object breaks the addiction cycle.

Monitor teen screen time without invasive surveillance or daily nagging

Parents fund Deals and receive daily email receipts showing teen progress. The app removes the need for daily conversations about phone use; parents see compliance through earnings, and teens maintain privacy—Dayo cannot access messages, camera, or apps outside the tracked selection.

Drop

Not a fit when

  • User has Android device; app is iOS only
  • User wants parental surveillance or message monitoring; Dayo explicitly does not provide this
  • User needs to track apps outside of chosen selection; Dayo only monitors selected apps
  • User prefers traditional willpower-based screen time reduction without gamification or rewards
  • User wants to cash out earnings as direct money; earnings are redeemable only as gift cards or PayPal transfers within the app ecosystem
