Crates

A better home for your music collection

Website crates.app
Overview

What it is

With Crates you can import from Spotify, Discogs, Bandcamp, YouTube and more, organize files with artwork and metadata, sync mobile and discover exciting new music through user shared Gems, not algorithms. Own your data and enjoy your music collection forever!

Intent

I need it when

Consolidate music from multiple sources (local files, Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Bandcamp) into a single organized library

Crates unifies local files and online collections under one interface, allowing users to import from Discogs, iTunes, Spotify, YouTube playlists, and more. Users can search, rate, tag, and create playlists across all sources without switching apps.

Discover new music through trusted community recommendations rather than algorithmic feeds

Crates Gems feature (Supporter only) lets users post rare or underrated tracks with personal context. Other users browse a feed, reveal/pass/downvote, and earn reputation. Highly upvoted users gain priority in genre-specific feeds, enabling human-driven discovery.

Streamline DJ workflow with automated metadata, file conversion, and batch organization

Crates offers configurable Actions for DJs: calculate BPM/KEY, rename files, convert formats (e.g., WAV to AIFF), move files to USB, and print customizable tracklists. Metadata persists to files readable by Rekordbox and CDJs, eliminating manual tagging.

Maintain full ownership and privacy of music library without cloud storage or data collection

Crates stores all library data locally on user devices; nothing is uploaded to Crates servers. Users own their data forever in a comprehensive format with periodic local backups. Crates cannot access, monitor, or collect music or listening data.

Automatically organize and enrich music metadata without manual tagging

Crates automatically fetches artwork, genres, release details, artist and label information from Discogs and other sources. It calculates BPM, key, and waveforms, delivering a customizable visual experience while persisting metadata into files for interoperability.

Drop

Not a fit when

  • User wants a primary streaming service to replace Spotify or Apple Music—Crates aggregates existing services but does not host music
  • User needs Android mobile app support—currently iOS only with Android coming soon
  • User requires Spotify in-app streaming—Crates cannot stream from Spotify directly
  • User prefers algorithmic discovery over community-curated recommendations—Crates emphasizes human-driven Gems discovery, not algorithmic playlists
  • User has minimal local music files and relies entirely on streaming—Crates is optimized for collectors with existing libraries across multiple sources
