Overview

What it is

A small, focused Pomodoro app that lives in your Mac menu bar. Free, open source, sandboxed. Focus journal, streaks, global hotkeys, optional Calendar export, and on-device AI weekly review powered by Apple Intelligence, your data never leaves your Mac.

Intent

I need it when

Customize work and break cycles to match different focus styles and work patterns

Breaks offers six cycle templates (Pomodoro, 52/17, Deep Work, Flowtime, Ultradian, Quick) with one-tap switching, plus full customization of work, short break, and long break durations. Global hotkeys enable quick session control without leaving your work.

Maintain focus during work sessions without distracting notifications or window clutter

Breaks runs quietly in the menu bar with a minimal icon and countdown timer, eliminating Dock clutter and competing notifications. The timer stays in the corner of your eye, allowing you to focus on work while remaining aware of session progress.

Use a Pomodoro timer that respects privacy and does not require account setup or data sharing

Breaks is free, open source, and runs entirely on-device with no servers, no account, no analytics, and no data collection. All AI features use Apple Foundation Models locally, ensuring complete privacy and ownership of focus journal data.

Export focus journal data for personal record-keeping or external analysis

Breaks optionally exports completed focus blocks to macOS Calendar or as a Markdown file that you own, giving you portable access to your focus history without vendor lock-in.

Track productivity patterns and build consistent work habits over time

Breaks logs each focus block with labels and project tags, maintains honest streaks with a weekly rest-day budget, and displays stats and heatmaps to visualize productivity patterns. Weekly AI-powered summaries reflect where focus went, helping users understand and improve habits.
