Bitgrain

Design studio lighter than Figma & more flexible than Canva

Overview

What it is

The first Beta version of Bitgrain & Bitgrain Studio is here! Most design tools feel the same. This one doesn’t. Bitgrain started with dithering, but now it’s a full template-based editor where you can create textured, standout visuals in minutes. Less clutter than Figma. More freedom than Canva.

Intent

I need it when

Apply professional texture and grain effects to images for editorial, indie, and experimental design

Bitgrain offers specialized tools for Floyd-Steinberg dithering, Bayer matrices, Sobel edge detection, halftone screens, FFT-based glitch, riso color separation, and ASCII conversion. Brush-based selective effects and non-destructive stacking let users apply textures precisely to specific layers for gig posters, zines, and editorial spreads.

Work on design projects without installation, signup, or uploading files to remote servers

Bitgrain runs entirely in the browser with no install or sign-in wall required. Image processing happens locally using WebAssembly and Canvas APIs, so user files never leave their machine. Free tier is immediately accessible for most album covers and posters.

Design graphics without AI and maintain full creative ownership and reproducibility

Bitgrain uses only classical image-processing algorithms with no neural networks, diffusion models, or prompts. Every effect is deterministic—same input produces identical output every time. Users can save projects, share with collaborators, and reopen years later to see exact same pixels, with no licensing fog or surprise AI outputs.

Create album covers, posters, and zines with authentic printed textures and grain effects

Bitgrain provides deterministic dithering, halftone, risograph, and grunge effects that replicate real printing techniques. Multi-layer editor with custom typography, snap guides, and print-resolution export lets users design album covers and posters that feel like they came off a real press, with full creative control and no AI watermarks.

Make music videos and looping visuals with consistent, reproducible visual effects

Bitgrain's browser-native video editor applies deterministic effects (riso, halftone, dither, glitch) that animate consistently frame-by-frame. Users can export MP4 directly from the browser with pixel-perfect texture preservation, ensuring the exact visual design survives export without AI smearing or artifacts.

Drop

Not a fit when

  • User needs real-time multiplayer collaboration or component libraries for UI design teams
  • User requires AI-powered image generation, upscaling, or auto-suggest features
  • User needs extensive stock template libraries and pre-built social media graphics
  • User works primarily on UI/UX design rather than creative visual content like album covers or posters
  • User requires cloud-based file storage and synchronization across devices
