Barrier

Stop doomscrolling by blocking your addictive apps!

Overview

What it is

Tired of doomscrolling? If you're anything like I was, you are. I built Barrier to help limit my scrolling to 10 minute increments. Once finished, the app locks and I'm forced to be productive. In order to unlock my apps, users are forced to wait 30 seconds. This gives your brain a moment to rethink the itch to open something without a real reason. Barrier is free and seriously effective (users report 70% less screen time). Stop scrolling. Start living.

Intent

I need it when

Create a barrier between impulse and action when tempted to use social apps

By requiring users to watch an ad before accessing blocked apps, Barrier adds a deliberate pause that gives users time to reconsider their impulse. This extra friction is intentionally designed to deter doomscrolling and mindless app use.

Maintain focus and productivity by limiting distracting app access during work or study

Barrier automatically locks designated apps after 10 minutes of use, preventing extended distraction. Users can set which apps to block and receive motivational reminders about their goals when attempting to open locked apps.

Reduce mindless social media scrolling and break phone addiction habits

Barrier blocks access to social media apps and forces users to watch a 30-second ad or wait before opening them, creating friction that encourages users to reconsider whether they really need to scroll. This intentional delay helps break automatic scrolling behavior.

Develop healthier digital habits and take control of screen time

Barrier acts as a digital wellness assistant that helps users monitor and limit their app usage. The app provides an always-locked feature for complete control and displays motivational phrases to reinforce healthy digital behavior goals.

Drop

Not a fit when

  • User wants to completely block apps without any friction or delay—Barrier requires watching a 30-second ad or waiting to unlock, which adds intentional friction
  • User needs granular time-based app restrictions—Barrier only supports one locked app list and cannot set different apps to lock at different times of day
  • User requires offline functionality—Barrier's ad-based unlock mechanism requires internet connectivity to load ads
  • User wants a premium ad-free experience—Barrier is free but monetized through ads; no paid tier exists to remove them
  • User needs parental controls with admin override—Barrier is designed for self-imposed digital wellness, not third-party enforcement
